Math Formulas

Language learning can be difficult and exhausting work so incorporating technology in the form of online games is one way to keep students engaged and involved in the learning process.  Online games and activities provide students with the opportunity to practice a variety of skills outlined in the Ontario Language and Media Literacy curriculum including the ability to identify sight words, parts of speech, proper grammar and the opportunity to practice both their reading and spelling skills.

Using online games in a mathematics classroom can give students a chance to examine fundamental concepts, such as counting, coding,  and computation strategies. 

Interactive games can encourage students to explore a variety of themes outlined in the Ontario Mathematics Curriculum including number combinations, patterns, measurement, fractions, etc.  In addition to this, games often engage students with these mathematical processes using everyday real-life experiences.

GAMIFICATION RESOURCES TO ENHANCE MATHEMATICS LEARNING...

1. Cash Out Canada

  • Grade Levels: 1-6

  • This fun game allows students to practice counting Canadian dollars and coins and making change after purchases are made by the animal characters.

This game could be played, along with other math games, at the Tech Math Centre where students could access the game on iPads, computers or Chromebooks.

  • Learning about money/currency typically occurs in one unit that can last from 1-3 weeks in length, especially in the primary grade years.

  • This game situates students in a real-life situation (buy food and making change).  Real-life application of math skills is essential to a student’s learning, as it allows them to relate it to their own personal experiences.

  • In order to keep the lunch lady happy, students have 3 minutes to help her get all eight students through the lunch line by adding up the prices of their food items before the next class rushes in.
